One building, built around the people in it.
The hub is for everyone we support. Mainstream group programs run here every weekday, and the same building is a safe, purpose-built base for participants with complex needs, including the people who've been turned away everywhere else because they're seen as too complex, or too dangerous. We built this place so they'd have somewhere to go.
It's also a drop-in home base. All our participants are free to drop in with their support workers whenever they like, for a cuppa, a catch-up, a familiar face. And because every part of BSS runs out of this one building, support workers, office staff and the director included, there's always someone here who knows them.
We want walking in to feel like coming home, one big family.
The mainstream heart of the hub, where group programs run, lunches are shared, and drop-ins land for a cuppa.
At the centre of the hub is a four-metre dining table where most of the day happens: group games, big conversations, craft and shared lunches. One table the whole group can sit around, backed by a fully accessible kitchen that's used for group cooking programs and one-on-one skill building alike.
Tiered recliners, a big screen and movie posters on the walls. Movie sessions are a weekly fixture here, and for participants who find public cinemas overwhelming, it's the same experience with the volume, the lighting and the crowd all within our control.
A dedicated space for painting, craft and structured group activities, with the drawers kept stocked. Participants' artwork goes straight up on the wall, and a walk through will show you whose gallery this really is.
Built to SDA robust design standards, the wing sits apart from the main group spaces, separate but never secluded. Each of our complex participants has a room allocated to them for the day, big enough to share with friends, theirs to fill with company or to keep to themselves when the day calls for quiet.
The wing is a pathway, not a destination. As skills grow and behaviour support strategies take hold, participants move out into the shared spaces at their own pace. We support up to six participants a day in the robust wing, so places are limited.
The upstairs rooms are home to our after-school program and school-holiday supports, and through the week they get plenty of use from participants of all ages.
Consoles, a racing simulator and space to play together or alone. For a lot of participants this is where connection starts, a shared game is often the easiest first conversation.
Bright, themed rooms with their own TVs and activities, sized for the smaller groups and shorter sessions that school-aged participants do best with.
This space is for participants who work best in smaller groups: craft sessions, board games, and social inclusion without the pressure of a crowd.
The hub is our participants' space first, so we keep visits planned and personal. Families, support coordinators and referrers are always welcome, call ahead and we'll walk you through in person.
